5/31/2023 0 Comments Centurylink wifi speed testWhen they ran out of easy install opportunities, expansion stopped. Google Fiber got a good deal in its partner cities to run the fiber next to existing power lines (which not every city has, they're all underground here). My experience from working at fiber ISPs is that the infrastructure is the hard part. People that want to use the Internet don't have enough money to do that, and that's why the business is tough. Think about how much money it costs to dig up a street and put cables under it, and then run them into each house along that street. There is the cartel effect going on (lobbying against municipal broadband), but even in the absence of that, it's still tough to be an ISP. Forget about the difficulties of generation-long projects, this makes anything longer than 4 years highly uncertain. It was approve & construction begun on one administration, a final portion for it put on hold by another, then opened again by a third, a fourth stopped it again resulting in its backers cancelling it (seemingly) once and for all. Whether you're for or against it, the Keystone pipeline is a prime example of the insanity that results from this. On the other hand it means that very important pieces of public policy are even further removed from election accountability and subject to the whims of different administrations. Technically this allows agencies to be more nimble, or as much as possible in any lumbering bureaucracy. That's the double edged sword in the US of having executive level departments with wide latitude to set regulations with the weight of law behind them but not the same high barrier of changing them as it takes to change a law. (And that's before we even get into the issue of the public comment ballot box getting stuffed by copypasta spam in favor of killing net neutrality and wink-and-nudge blind eye turned away from it.) Then we got an FCC chair who not only took it away, but actively trolled people who were angry about it. In the US we had it for a brief period of time. I think you've either found a technical bug or a, uh, "the speedtest is good so my internet must be fine" "bug" (which would be very interesting). aaaand remember that it's persistent (for just the tab) until you turn it back off :) lol)Įdit: Just found downthread describing seeing 100Mbps through a 10Mbit hub. Now I'm curious what model PHY (well, NIC) you're using.įWIW, Chrome's devtools has a network rate limiter built in (network tab, dropdown that says "No throttling", open that and hit "add". I think speedtest websites try to measure both the burst rate and the line rate, so perhaps something's gotten very tangled up on both the PHY and JS sides. Remembering that experience got me thinking - without any idea what I'm talking about, I'm wondering if the PHY layer is doing something vaguely similarly stupid-simple that does technically limit the line rate to 10Mb at full blast, but still allows throughput to very briefly burst higher than that. (I'm still looking for a way to synthetically limit a link in ways that are physically accurate.) IIRC I was just playing with the default approaches you'd find bandied about on tutorial websites and such. While stumbling around attempting to figure out `tc qdisc` a while back I found that the shaping it was applying was very synthetic, such that asking for low bitrate and high latency would mean the kernel would just wait a second or two then shunt several KB of data through at once. You mean you told the PHY to renegotiate at 10M with something like `ethtool -s speed 10`?

5/31/2023 0 Comments The sinking city tropesUrban fantasy is a tough genre for me to get into, and that how it felt here too. So, if you’re looking for a magical YA-book set in Venice, then this is for you! Be prepared for a rollercoaster of emotions, though. Zan and Ellie definitely had distinct voices to me, too. I could sympathise with the characters, felt their fear and the sometimes dark atmosphere. I didn’t like how they talked about Typics (Normal people) and how easily they manipulated them, though. The Skilled with their magical system worked nicely, I especially loved the clear limits their talents had and how the consequences were presented. Like, they’re acting independently, it’s not his fault!Īnyway, I loved the setting in Venice, which was refreshing after all the European-medieval-inspired high fantasy I read. The only thing I wasn’t a fan of was how everyone blamed Zan for the actions of someone else. But it was nice (and sad) to see him grow. There are many twists, there’s lots of love and betrayal and murder, and you’ll definitely be asking yourself whom you can trust.Įllie really grew on me, with her newfound courage and determination- Her and Benji were really cute siblings too! Zan grew on me as well, kinda surprisingly, since he sometimes made questionable decisions in the beginning. That changed, though, so no worries if you weren’t the biggest fan of that particular series! I´ll be honest, the beginning of it all reminded me a bit of The Mortal Instruments, of Clary and Jace and so on. Soon, she finds out about fighting families and magic and that she is at the core of their conflict. When exploring said city with her brother, she runs into Zan and his friends, who seem a little bit odd to her. Thank you!Įllie has moved with her family and now lives close to Venice. I got an Arc of this book in exchange for an honest review. It was a good distraction for a little while but not an adventure I'll be looking to continue. Unfortunately, Sinking City spent so much time on the freaking insta-love that it never really (truly) came into its own as a well rounded Fantasy. The premise of magical mobsters with a multitude of powers but only 1 dominant gift was really promising. I tore through this predictable (semi) guilty pleasure and that is the best I can say about it. This was a quick jaunt through Venice Italy. Here it was shameless, unapologetic and extremely off-putting. an author can manage to make an insta-love work but that was not the case here. Oh, and then there was the predictable insta-love. The MCs were difficult to get behind, possibly due to an unfortunate lack of dimension. The cast was decent, although each persona could have seriously benefited from some extra character boosting oomph. steamrolling over its rough spots like the Character Development. Things never felt stagnant nor sluggish which kept the story rolling along. gawk at its renowned architecture, be paddled around the canals in the world famous gondolas, eat my fill at a Saint's festival and drink coffee at a street Cafe with a flirty companion. wade knee deep in canal water, walk its historic streets. The descriptions of the backdrop alone made me yearn to visit. This read was a quick, fun, lighthearted romp through the streets of Northern Italy. An unputdownable story and a great start to a new series. The characters are relatable, credible and multidimensional, Zan is a an interesting male MC (very welcome in a genre mostly populated by FMC), that despite his pragmatic approach to the case, is a nice, relatable human being dealing with his own life in the best possible way, until he realizes that in the world of the Skilled, neutrality isn’t really an option. Patterson’s & Walker story is compelling and inspiring, fast-paced with a balanced mix of action, romance, and description elements, that make the world of the skilling come alive in every page, making Venice another main character in the action. In his effort to help Ellie Zan discovers some hidden and dark truths about his own family, that will force him to rethink his loyalties. Zan struggles between his wishes to stay apart and his growing attraction to Ellie, the later wins. Zan Mardova (MC) has never showed any interesting in the family politics, he rather prefers to enjoy the adrenaline rush on, racing his motorcycle, but everything changes when he meets Ellie, a normal girl that has become the center of a rival family conspiracy. The most powerful family the Mardovas, rules the city with an iron hand, exercising total control over her enemies and keeping all magic secret deeply buried. The story takes place contemporary Venice, where an underground magical society, composed of powerful families that wage magic wars while keeping the normal human population none the wiser. “Sinking City” marks the start to the new Urban Fantasy “The Skilled” Series, by Janci Patterson and Megan Walker. ? The National Weather Service,, and the websites of countless others offer the plain and simple advice: "Never try to out-drive a tornado in a vehicle." Morgan's statement of a 'mile-wide debris ball', seen by him on radar and described on-air, was never authenticated real-time and was later proved to be false. Had the tornado not lifted, hundreds, if not thousands of people would have died, their cars thrown from the highway, many ejected or sucked out of their vehicles. Thankfully, the tornado rose into the clouds only a few hundred feet before the highway, and spared the lives of these trapped people. (Formerly FreeBSD, Nintendo Wii, and Nintendo DSi) 5/31/2023 0 Comments Ten thumbs upIn February 2012, popular South Indian actor Mahesh Babu became a spokesperson for Thums Up. Īdvertising campaigns from Thums Up build on its "strength" and its perception as a macho drink. Product placement in films was used in the 1980s with Thums Up appearing in the background of many Hindi films. The slogan later became "I want My Thunder", and subsequently "Taste the thunder!" The famous slogan until the early 1980s was "Happy days are here again", coined by copywriter, Vasant Kumar. This would later be modified by Coca-Cola with blue strokes and a more modern-looking typeface. The original Thums Up logo was a red thumbs up hand gesture with a slanted, white, sans-serif typeface. The beverage also contains natural colour (150d) and added flavours ("natural, nature identical and artificial flavouring substances"). Ingredients Ĭarbonated water, sugar, acidity regulator ( E338), and caffeine. The brand's market share and equity increased. "Grow up to Thums Up" was a successful campaign. Thums Up started an advertising campaign directly attacking Pepsi’s television commercials, focusing on the strength of the drink hoping that the depiction of an "adult" drink would appeal to young consumers. The brand was re-positioned as a "manly" drink, drawing on its strong taste qualities. The Coca-Cola Company by this time had about 60.5% share of the Indian soft-drink market but found out that if it took out Thums Up, it would remain with only 28.7% of the market, hence Thums Up was re-launched, targeting 30- to 40-year-olds. Instead, Coca-Cola decided to use Thums Up as a rival brand to Pepsi. At first, Coca-Cola cut advertising and production for Thums Up to drive customers to their flagship brand, but soon realised that Thums Up customers would turn to Pepsi instead of Coca-Cola, were Thums Up withdrawn from the market. Relaunch ĭespite its strong overall equity, the brand was losing its popularity among the core cola-drinking age group of 12- to 25-year-olds, partly due to a lack of advertising. When these were sold to Coca-Cola, Thums Up had a market share of 85 percent in India. Later in the year, Coca-Cola bought the Parle-owned drinks Gold Spot, Limca and Thums Up for $60 million. In 1993, Coca-Cola re-entered the market, and the three companies competed intensely. This nickname gained popularity in smaller towns where people would ask for "Maha Cola" instead of Thums Up. Thums Up also introduced a larger 300 ml (10 US fl oz) bottle, branded "MahaCola" (meaning 'great cola' the original size was 250 ml (8.5 US fl oz)). Pepsi advertisements included major Indian movie stars like Juhi Chawla, while Thums Up increased its spending on cricket sponsorship. Thums Up and Pepsi subsequently engaged in heavy competition for endorsements. In 1991, when the Indian government opened the market to multinationals, Pepsi was the first to come in. They originally planned to name the drink “Thumbs Up,” but removed the “b” to make the name unique. After much testing and experimentation, the Chauhan brothers and their research team created a cola that was fizzier and spicier than Coca-Cola. The company also wanted the drink to be fizzy, even when it was not ice-cold, so it could be sold by vendors. Ramesh Chauhan had developed the formula from scratch, experimenting with ingredients such as cinnamon, cardamom, and nutmeg. Thums Up quickly became the most popular cola brand in India and achieved a near monopoly among cola products in India during the 1980s, above other cola products such as Campa Cola, Double Seven, Dukes and United Breweries Group's McDowell's Crush. The Chauhan brothers owned part of the Parle company and already had two other brands of soda, Limca and Gold Spot, which were popular in India at the time. Thums Up was created in 1977, after the American company Coca-Cola withdrew from India, due to regulations requiring it to disclose its formula and sell 60% of its equity to an Indian company under a government plan for foreign-owned companies to share stakes with domestic partners. In 2021, the company became a billion-dollar brand in India. In 2018, Thums Up announced they will launch the aerated beverage in Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Nepal. The brand was later bought by Coca-Cola who re-launched it in order to fight against Pepsi to capture the market.Īs of February 2012, Thums Up is the leader in the cola segment in India, commanding approximately 42% market share and an overall 15% market share in the Indian aerated waters market. It was introduced in 1977 to offset the withdrawal of The Coca-Cola Company from India. Thums Up is an Indian multinational brand of cola in India. |
